The Mayor of Calpe, Ana Sala, accompanied by Ana Perles, Councillor for Health, travelled today to Alicante to meet Encarna Llinares, the Regional Government Commissioner for Health. The aim of the meeting is to find a solution to the problem of patient transport in Calpe.

Last January, the Calpe City Council informed the regional government representatives of the precarious situation. In recent years, the City Council has signed a cooperation agreement with the Calpe Red Cross, which has made it possible to maintain the transport of sick people at the expense of the city. But ambulance transport is a competence of the regional government, and the city is therefore unable to maintain the service.

At the moment the service is inadequate: a Soporte Vital Básico to transport sick people to the Hospital de Denia, the SAMU Emergency Service based in Benissa and the TNA Service (unaccompanied ambulance) based in Denia. It is often the case that the Soporte Vital Básico is not able to transport patients from the Urbanizaciones or from the city centre to the Centro de Salud Calpe if the car is transporting somebody else to the Hospital de Dénia. In such situations, the SAMU emergency service will be needed and will have to travel from Benissa to Calpe - unless it currently has another service - to the home or the place where the patient or casualty is to be transported to the Centro de Salud.

The programmed TNA service (unaccompanied ambulance) transports the sick to the hospital to facilitate participation in external and programmed visits to the doctor. However, the TNA service is not suitable for emergencies. Due to the population structure of Calpe - where many elderly people live due to the high density of foreigners - and the widely dispersed municipal area - where 50% of the population live in urbanizaciones outside the city centre, the problem becomes particularly acute when more tourists come to the city. Because of these circumstances and the great distance between Calpe and Denia (34 kilometres) and the increased population in the summer, the city reinforced the service in the summer with various temporary workers.

There is a lack of paediatricians

Another point discussed at the meeting was the lack of paediatricians at the Centro de Salud de Calpe. In fact, only one paediatrician is responsible for the entire population. Llinares drew the city's attention to the low number of paediatricians in Spain and explained that more paediatricians would be hired in the near future.

New Centro de Salud

Another demand of the city in terms of health is the demand for the establishment of a second health centre, since the present one dates back to 1990, when the Calpe population was 9,000 people. Today, Calpe has 22,000 registered residents, to which must be added the thousands of tourists who visit us every year, and although a clinic is set up in the beach area during the summer, there is still a need for better health infrastructure.

Banys de la Reina

Every Tuesday during July and August, the Calpe City Council has organised tours to the Roman archaeological remains of the "Banys de la Reina". These are free guided tours, led by the archaeologist Alicia Luján, who will explain the history and important details of the find.

The "Banys de la Reina" is one of the most important archaeological sites of their category in Roman Spain. The find dates from the end of the 2nd century AD to the 7th century AD and consisted of a group of luxurious Roman villas whose architectural design and mosaics made of black and white stones and marble from distant places are remarkable. The find is located near the sea; its name refers to basins carved into the rock containing fishes.

The meeting point for these guided tours is the "Molí del Morelló" at 9:30 a.m. Registration is not necessary, but as the tours are limited to groups of maximum 25 - 30 people, punctuality is highly recommended. More information at the Casa de Cultura, phone +965 839 123.

The Festival Committee 2019 elects the Queen of the Festival of Calpe and the Queen of the Children on the Plaza Mayor on  June, 29. The election begins at 22:00 and is the most important ceremony organised by the festival committee.

39 28-year-old candidates stand for the election of the Festival Queen. In the same election, the children's queen is also selected from 22 8-year-old candidates. All the candidates will be accompanied by children and young people born in 2011 and 2012, who will be part of the Festival Commission, and the members of the Festival Commission from 1981. The committee will be chaired by Raquel Pastor.

The election of the queens is, as every year, carried out by a notary during the gala of the public presentation of the festival committee. During the Gala, the 2018 Queens, Lucía Tenza and Sandra Simarro, will also be bid farewell. As tradition dictates, the Queens of the Year 2018 will draw the names of the new Queens. Their names will then be read out as soon as the honourable accompanying ladies appear on stage. The gala will be presented by the journalist Juan Nieto and María Pineda, member of the Committee.

The celebration will take place in the Plaza Mayor. Large gateways to the stage and 2,000 chairs will be installed on the square. The 2019 Festival Committee, which is responsible for organising the patron saint's festivities in August, has already organised other events as part of this year's program, such as the presentation of the Blusón, the organisation of the Three Kings Parade and the Easter Week events.

With the arrival of summer the Calpe City Council has launched another year the campaign to prevent and detect tiger mosquito. From June to October a company will be responsible for placing traps in different areas of the municipality to conduct a census of this insect and be able to act with greater forcefulness in areas where its presence is detected. This company will also carry out prevention work in the rest of the municipality.

The City Council recalls that in the fight against the tiger mosquito the citizens play a fundamental role since it is estimated that more than 90 percent of the places where mosquitoes  can breed are private. The Aedes albopictus is raised in water accumulations, such as animal drinkers, water tanks, vases with water, scuppers ... so it is recommended not to keep containers that accumulate water to prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes. In addition, citizens can contact the municipality if they detect the presence of these mosquitoes so that the company fighting mosquitoes knows the places they frequent and thus be able to act against them.

On the other hand, the City Council has applied to the Universal and Public Health Department of the Regional Government  for a subsidy of 3,630 Euros for treatment costs to fight the tiger mosquito for the year 2019.

The tiger mosquito is an invasive species native to Southeast Asia, able to breed in almost any accumulation of water that remains more than five days. Its bite is very annoying and can also occur during daylight hours.

One of the first measures of the government of the new mayor, Ana Sala, has been the signing of the decree by which the City Council orders the company that is carrying out building works on the Alemania street, which immediately paralyzes any type of discharged into the maritime-terrestrial public domain.

The Department of the Environment was aware of the arrival of water with suspended materials in the Arenal-Bol beach for weeks and it was proven that they came from the water pumping of the groundwater level of the works on Alemania street. At that time, a resolution was issued in which the company responsible for the works was required to prove that they had the discharge authorization in accordance with the Coastal Law.

Although from the company ensures that they are clean waters (attaching analysis reports) so far has not been accredited to obtain the discharge authorization required by the City Council. The Calpe City Council has set up a geoportal, a web-based tool that integrates all geographical information about the municipality and can be displayed on various maps. In this way, citizens, businesses and the various public institutions can now quickly and flexibly retrieve all data related to a specific physical area of the town and originating from both the city council and other public administrations.

With the geoportal, citizens can access the urban planning information for each plot of land in the locality (with its features, compatible uses...), environmental information (i.e. the protected areas of the locality, the beaches, the seabed cartography, the type of soil)....), street furniture (where the lights, trees, benches, wastebaskets, pedestrian crossings or letterboxes are located...), the street map of the town (with its names, neighbourhood borders, streets and registration offices). In addition, there are a number of questions related to mobility (where parking meters and areas with limited parking times are located), where the sewage and water supply pipes are located, as well as areas at risk of flooding and earthquakes. Citizens can also use this portal to find out the status of the procedures.

The geoportal also contains aerial photographs of the city from 1956, which show the development of the city area.

The aim of such a tool is to create more transparency and to make information about the city of Calpe accessible to the citizens. Citizens can not only view but also download this information and save time by not having to visit the city's offices.

On the other hand, the geoportal becomes a useful tool for the city administration. It also gives city officials access to other information, such as the tax levies, the registration office or at a glance, which properties pay the property tax (IBI), the waste disposal levies or the entrance fees (vado). City employees can also find out which citizens live in which neighbourhoods or which apartments are unoccupied.

Calpe is preparing its infrastructure so that people with reduced mobility can also enjoy the sea, because from Saturday 15 June and until 15 September, the two main beaches of the municipality of Calpe, Fossa and Arenal-Bol, will have separate bathing areas specially adapted to the needs of people with mobility problems, the elderly and the visually impaired. These areas of the beach for disabled guests are located in the Fossa at Llevant Street and on Arenal-bol Beach at Holland Street.

These areas are equipped with amphibious chairs and crutches, handicapped accessible bathrooms, shower and dressing rooms as well as lifeguards, who look after and accompany the users of the beach. If you wish, you can also choose to be accompanied by a trained relative. These beaches are open from Monday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and have reserved parking spaces nearby.

On 21 June, the Instituto de Investigación en Medio Ambiente y Ciencia Marina (IMEDMAR) of the Catholic University

will open the underwater path on Racó de Calpe beach for the use and enjoyment of people with disabilities. This path, unique in the Valencia region, consists of five panels marked on the surface by buoys connected by floating dew and 10 informative panels on the most characteristic species of the Mediterranean.

To ensure that the underwater paths can also be used by disabled people, the design consists of a panel structure and a rope connecting the buoys to facilitate support and movement between the panels. There is also a snorkelling area that allows disabled people to lie down and snorkel.

The underwater path facilities will be disassembled in September and rebuilt before the next summer. Cala del Racó, just below the Peñón de Ifach summit, offers a great variety of important Mediterranean marine species.

Last Saturday, the Communications Department of the Calpe City Council organised the first conference of journalists in public administrations. One of the main conclusions of the conference in Calpe, attended by more than 50 journalists from different public administrations, was that communication must serve the citizen and not the politician.

This is the first time that a conference has taken place in Spain, attended by journalists working in public administrations, with the aim of reflecting on the problems and questions that concern the work of these professionals.

The conference included 2 keynote speeches. In the first, Antonio Nevado, head of the Press Department of the National Police, explained the development of this institution, which moved from traditional communication channels to communication via social networks and became one of the reference organizations in the world. The Twitter account of the National Police, with 3 million followers, is the most respected institutional profile in the world, even before the FBI.

The second of the keynote speeches was given by Patricia Plaja, head of communication at the Mossos d'Esquadra, the Catalonian Regional Police, who explained the social network management carried out by this organisation during the Barcelona terrorist attacks and which has become a reference point for how to communicate with citizens in emergency situations.

The day was completed with 3 round tables.

The first dealt with the challenges faced by communications departments today. The discussion was moderated by Patricia Pastor from the Communications Department of the Calpe City Council; communication experts such as Pilar Muñoz from the Hospital La Fe in Valencia, José García from the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencian Government) or Laura Baldó from Alicante-Elche Airport and Valencia participated in the panel discussions.

The second of the roundtables dealt with the situation existing in many public administrations between journalists who are appointed as advisors and those journalists who are civil servants after overcoming an exam for Public Service. Paula Meseguer of the Costa Blanca Tourist Board, Ana Perales de Labora of the Generalitat Valenciana, Rafa Ordoñez of the Diputación de Valencia and Gema Marí of the Alboraya City Council participated in this table. The table was moderated by the person in charge of political information of Information, the daily newspaper, Pere Rostoll.

The third of the panel discussions focused on a topic that reflects the changes in the routines and working methods of the communications departments and was entitled "I this the End of Press Releases? Encarna Hernández de Novagob, Jorge Villar of Elche City Council, Daniel Robles of UPV and Toni Fuster of Benidorm City Council took part in this discussion. The discussion was moderated by Amparo Soria of the Calpe City Council. .

The conference was attended by more than 50 journalists from various public administrations, including the city councils of Mollet del Vallés, Pozuelo de Alarcón, Denia, Castellón and the Conselleria de Agricultura (Ministry of Agriculture of the Regional Government).
