The Cultural Council has launched a campaign to renovate the various murals with different facades in the Old Town. The project began with work on the mural in the Plaza del Mosquit, painted by Elías Úrbez in 1990.

In order to carry out this initiative, agreements were signed with the owners before work began, as the mural is privately owned on a façade. The mural was also redesigned by Elías Úrbez himself in order to adapt the opening of two small windows to the original project.

The renovation of the façade and the scaffolding were awarded to the company Akra and the professors of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Altea, David Trujillo, Iván Albalate and José Antonio Hinojos. They will be responsible for the restoration of the mural. The whole process counts with the approval and advice from Elías Úrbez and his son Jordi Úrbez. The works are carried out using special solar silicate paints, which hold on to old mortars and retain their properties and colour despite solar radiation and weather conditions.

The project has a total budget of €40,000 and will be completed by the end of the year. The City Council for Culture, led by Pilar Cabrera, has highlighted the commitment of the Úrbez family and the cooperation of the inhabitants in restoring a symbolic mural, as it is one of the most visited and photographed corners of the Old Town.

The campaign to restore the old town paintings will continue in the coming months with the mural painted by Pierre Le Fleur in 1989, located in Santísimo Cristo and Reverendo Penalva Street opposite the Torreó de la Peça.

The Tourism Department of the City of Calpe will take part in the World Travel Market in London, the most important tourism fair in the world, from 4 November, with the clear aim of maintaining the important British market in Calpe.

The British tourist is one of the most traditional of Calpe together with the German; in fact he is the most important international market; therefore the tourism department of the city aims - because of the nearby Brexit - to strengthen those measures to ensure that the British tourism does not diminish.

During the fair, direct campaigns will be carried out with British travel agencies and tour operators, insisting on those tour operators who already offer Calpe in their catalogues, but also on those who offer the product bicycle tourism.

Although the 2019 season can be considered satisfactory as demand has been maintained in a complex environment affecting the tourism markets, the side effects that Brexit produces on the UK market have been accompanied by a slight decline in British tourists. The recent bankruptcy of Thomas Cook is a clear example of the current tourist situation and it is therefore necessary to step up advertising efforts in the traditional markets for Calpe, such as the British market.

In this context, in the fourth quarter of the year, the Tourism Department commissioned a specific promotional campaign for the United Kingdom in order to make the destination known to new travel agencies and tour operators.

Calpe started yesterday, Thursday, the events of the "Moros y Cristianos" in honour of the Santíssim Crist de la Suor, with the presentation of the festival book and a square concert of the Unión Musical Calp-Ifac. The "filás" (armies) of the Contrabandistas and Mozárabes, who celebrate their 40th anniversary, were also honoured on this occasion.

Today, Friday, at 13:00, the bells will ring and the salutes will be fired to announce the beginning of the festival. In the evening, at 19:00, the chapels, which move through the streets of the city, move in. At 20:00 the standards are hoisted on the Plaza Mayor. Juan José Olcina Navarro, president of the Associació de Sant Jordi de Alcoy, will give the opening speech. At the end, all the armies and the 2019 Festival Committee will march through the streets to the church to offer the candle sacrifice to the patron saint of the city.

At 00:30, Moors and Christians meet for the typical "entraetes" and wander through the old town, and at 01:00 the flag bearer's dance is scheduled in the Plaza del Arco Iris.

On Saturday the 19th, the festivities begin at 12:30 with a street parade of the youth chapel of the Unión Musical through the old town. At 7 p.m., from Calle Benissa to Plaza Colón, the great entrance of the Moors and Christians begins - the highlight of a whole year's work for both armies, because now both show their best costumes, floats, dances and all sorts of attractions, making this parade one of the most attractive in the whole province. At 01:30 the dance of the Moorish captain takes place in Calle San José.

On Sunday the first battle is fought between both armies, because at 11:00 the Moorish troops land on the Arenal beach. This is undoubtedly one of the most attractive moments of the festival. In the afternoon the children are the stars, because at 18:00 clock starts on the Calle Benissa the child parade. At 20:30 Moors and Christians meet again for the second battle, and in the Plaza Mayor the "miracle" takes place. This is one of the most important moments of the festival: "Caragol" succeeds in closing the gates of the city after the betrayal of "Moncofar".

On Monday the 21st, children's games will take place in the Plaza de España, and at 23:15 from the Plaza del Arco Iris of the "Correfocs" the Colla Dimonis Ingava from Font d' En Carrós will start. At 00:30 Pirotecnia Hnos. Caballer in the Plaza Mayor a "mascletá" (powder fireworks) shoot, and in 01:00 the Christian captain holds his dance in the Plaza del Mosquit.

Tuesday, the 22nd, Feast of Santísimo Cristo del Sudor, begins with the greeting of the festival queens, their court ladies, etc. through the chapel of the Unión Musical Calpe-Ifach, to then move to the Town Hall and listen to the Holy Mass in the Plaza Mayor. At the end of the Mass, a new "mascletá" is shot down and the figure of Christ is brought back to the church.

In the afternoon at 17:00 there will be a pelota game of the "a llargues" modality for professionals on Calle García Ortiz, and at 20:00 the festive procession.

The extension of the concession for the "Zona Azul" (Regulated Parking) service for the company Pavapark ends on 25 October next, so that the parking regulation is suspended and can citizens can park freely.

Although the Traffic Department of the city is already preparing the new tender documents, it will take a few months until a new company is awarded the contract. The city would like to include some conditions in the new tender for the benefit of citizens and shop owners.

The end of the extension and the temporary end of the "Zona Azul" (regulated parking) has nothing to do with the investigation initiated by the Civil Guard into irregularities in the management of the concession company.

The number of gender-related violence decrees in force in Calpe has increased by 30 per cent in the last two years and is currently at 56, according to Modes Salazar, head of the unit against violence against women in the government's sub-delegation to the Round Table against Gender Violence, following the alleged murder in Calpe in which a Belgian woman was murdered in front of her partner.

The meeting was also attended by the Mayor of the city of Ana Sala and representatives of the Guardia Civil, the local police, the Centro de la Mujer 24 horas, the Oficina de Atención a las Víctimas and employees of the Social Welfare Office of the City of Calpe.

Of the 56 decrees in force, four correspond to minor victims; in one of these cases, the aggressor is also a minor. The Round Table not only took note of the number of gender-specific assaults in the town, but also served to coordinate social and police resources in the fight against this plague.

At the meeting, Modes Salazar, head of the Women's Violence Department of the government's sub-delegation, stressed the importance for the victims of gender-based violence of knowing the AlertCops app, a citizen security alert app that allows citizens to alert the state security forces to a criminal situation in which they are victims or witnesses.

The municipality of Calpe has a team composed of an equal opportunities representative, a promoter and a legal adviser who provides psychological, legal and social assistance to victims of violence against women and their families, coordinated where necessary with the Dénia Health Centre and the Dénia Centre for the Assistance of Victims of Violence against Women.

  • The Equality Department is located at Calle Llibertat, 36, and the telephone number is +34 96.583.51.11. It should also be remembered that the general telephone number for the care of victims of sexual abuse is 016.
