The play "Un espíritu burlón" by the "El lugá" theatre association from Málaga will be the opening act of the IX National Amateur Theatre Competition "Antonio Ferrer, the Postman" on February 2. This is one of the plays that will be performed in the competition together with "Maison Close" by the cultural association "Paraskenia Teatro" from Talavera de la Reina and "Romeo e Giulietta, una commedia de W. Shakespeare" by the theatre group "Platea" from Tomelloso.

"Un espíritu burlón" by Noel Coward is a funny comedy that tells a story with the subtlety of English humour, in which the author achieves a pleasant mixture of reality, fantasy and absurdity, with funny situations in which the mysteries of the occult and the apparitions from the hereafter disturb the peaceful existence of a marriage.

On February 9, "Maison Close" will be performed by "Paraskenia Teatro". "Maison Close" is a dramatic comedy by Romain Gary, a French writer and diplomat of Lithuanian-Jewish origin, whose main character is Madame Nicole, a former Jewish prostitute who survived Auschwitz and lives in Paris. She lives with Totó, a young man whom she picked up when she was four years old. Totó has a brutal obsession with knowing his origins, and who takes care of Madame Nicole, who is in decline, sick and has gaps in her memory.

And on February 16 the group "Platea" will perform the play "Romeo e Giulietta, una commedia de W. Shakespeare" by Alberto Palacios and Juliet Olmedo. The competition ends on February 23 with the award ceremony and the non-competitive performance of Yllana, who will perform the "Gag Movie". The plays will be performed at 18.30 hours. They are free, limited to the capacity of the theatre and require a ticket, which can be picked up at the box office on the day of the performance.

The competition is endowed with 4,000 euros, 2,000 euros for the best play and 1,000 euros for each of the selected works. Prizes will also be awarded for the best director, the best male and female roles and the best production. The competition was created in 2012 to honour the theatre, an artistic discipline that has been a tradition in Calpe for over a hundred years, in honour of the local actor Antonio Ferrer.

Next Saturday, the City´ Culture Counselor will begin a cycle of children's theatre entitled "Anem a l'Auditori", which will offer a theatre performance each month, the theme of which will coincide with a special day of the month. The free performances are intended to promote theatre among children and generate quality cultural content without leaving the municipality.

The cycle begins next Saturday, the 25th, with the "Días de nocilla y magia" by the Nacho Diago ensemble, which coincides with the Day of the Magician. This is a performance recommended by the Spanish Network of Theatres and Auditoriums, and on this occasion it will be organised jointly by the Culture Conselor and Youth, also as part of the "Family Day" programme.

On February 15th, coinciding with World Cancer Day, the show "Oscar, the sleeping child" by the El espejo Negro ensemble will be performed. This play, which has reached the final round of the XX Max Prize for Performing Arts 2017, is jointly organized by Culture and Youth Counselors as part of the "Family Day" program.

World Theatre Day will be celebrated on 21 March with "A la luna" by Voilà Producciones, a surprising show that brings together theatre and animated cinema, recommended by the Spanish network of theatres and auditoriums.

On May 30th, World Family Day will be celebrated with "El viaje de Ulises" by the Ensemble Gorakada, a finalist in the Max Performing Arts Awards 2019.

In June, Toom Pack's music show "Reciclart School" is planned on the occasion of World Music Day. The instruments will be made from recycled materials.

In July, the International Friendship Day is celebrated, and for this purpose the City Council for Culture has organised the interactive show "Seu-te" by Acrobacia Mínima. This edition, like the one in August, moves to the Plaza de la Villa. In August, La Trócoa Circ presents "Potted" on the occasion of International Youth Day.

On September 27th, on the occasion of World Brotherhood Day, La Canica presents "Historia de un calcetín", a performance recommended by the Spanish Theatre and Auditorium Network. October is dedicated to World Cities Day with the show "The Dream of Jules Verne" by JM Gestión Teatral.

The International Day of Tolerance is celebrated in November with the play "Les 7 diferències" by El pont flotant, an integrative show that introduces children to other forms of existence through music, play and humour. This day is also organised jointly by the Culture and Youth Counselors as part of the "Family Day" programme.

And the programme culminates on 5 December with the "Adiós Peter Pan" by Festuc Teatre on the occasion of the International Volunteers' Day. This is a puppet and actor play that has won the Fetén 2019 Award and is a candidate for the Max Awards.

In addition, the "Anem a l'Auditori" programme is complemented by the free children's theatre workshop "El sueño de Laia" (Laia's Dream) for children aged 8 to 12. This workshop takes place every Monday from 3 February to 29 June from 17 to 18.30 in the Casa de Cultura.

The storm that hits the municipality at this time leaves a balance of considerable damage to beaches and promenades, especially on Fossa beach, where the waves have destroyed the wall of the promenade and reached the interior of the shops. The Les Basetes area has also been badly affected by the strong waves.

At Fossa beach, the sea water covered the entire area with sand and the waves tore down the walls and carried away benches, pavements and street furniture, destroying the tourist information stand. The urban quality brigades have already started to remove the rubble with shovels and trucks, and it is planned that this work will continue throughout the day.

The area of the Arenal beach has also been affected, although to a lesser extent a rock fall, a palm tree and the water have taken up part of the sandy area.

According to Mayor Ana Sala, it is still too early to quantify the expected damage and there are already plans to apply for the declaration of a disaster area. An emergency meeting was held at the end of the morning to determine the measures to be taken in the coming hours.

In addition to the damage to the promenades, a large number of damages was registered, such as falling facade elements, toppling trees, awnings, advertising posters, metal roofs and traffic signs. The sports facilities have also been affected, in the Domingo Crespo Pavilion slabs were cut off the roof and water has penetrated the Ifach Pavilion and the Pista Azul.

Avenida Juan Carlos I, between the Calle Xàbia and Avenida Jaume I roundabouts, which leads to La Fossa Beach, has been closed to traffic. In the early morning, the Avenida Generalitat Valenciana and Rumanía were also closed, but traffic in this area has already resumed.

On the other hand, the Town Hall and the Red Cross of Calpe provide blankets, warm clothes and hot food for people who need it, and the Red Cross headquarters itself takes in people who have no place to sleep. Yesterday, classes were cancelled in all the community's educational centres, and today we are waiting for the weather to change to decide whether or not to cancel classes tomorrow.

The City Council for Tourism has already designed the calendar of tourist fairs to be attended this year, which represents a strategy of continuity in advertising in the city's traditional and basic markets. In order to maintain the current staffing, but also to make the visit of guests independent of the season, Calpe has developed a program that includes participation in a total of 7 fairs

The calendar starts with FITUR in January, the Salon des Vacances in Brussels in February, ITB in Berlin in March, MEDSEA in Alicante, World Travel Market in London in November and the Dutch Sneak Previer Solmar in Maarheeze in December.

In addition to the tourism fairs, the City Council for Tourism, coordinated by Paco Avargues, runs two major promotional activities, such as the campaign on billboards and Muppis on the domestic market and the Jet2 promotion, one of the main British operators. Jet2 is promoting the winter product as part of its de-seasonalisation plan.

Advertising activities are also planned on the German market and the Scandinavian countries. However, the promotion plan will be consolidated next month when the Tourism Council, whose rules have already been approved, is finalised and the results of the 2020-2030 strategic plan are incorporated.

The plenary session of the Calpe Town Council today dealt with the protection of the last unspoiled land on the coast of Calpe, a plot of land in the Urbanización Manzanera, located directly on the coast, of approximately 10,000m2 with a buildable area of 1.2%.

As the Councillor for Landscape Planning, Juan Manuel del Pino, explained, this is a plot of land on which a building permit could be applied for, so it is urgent to "open a debate on three alternatives: to maintain the current status of the land and grant a building permit, expropriation with the economic disadvantage, or move the development to other areas in the same Urbanización La Manzanera. The latter option, which is defended by the municipal government, would mean a re-qualification of the green spaces and facilities in La Manzanera, in order to use them and increase the possibility of building on the plots that are still to be developed.

All opposition groups have voted against the option of transferring development to other areas. Defendamos Calpe's spokesman, Paco Quiles, has pointed out the lack of a report on the economic viability and uncertainty about the ownership of the land. For his part, the spokesman for Compromís, Ximo Perles, has advocated expropriation in order to save the land, "and to avoid transferring the development potential of one area to another, we do not share the idea of the Landscape Council to draw this option at no cost".

The Socialist Group spokesperson, Santos Pastor, has opted for a revision of the general plan, as "with this proposal we condemn the few green spaces of La Manzanera" and has proposed to open a study on forced expropriations.

The Councillor for Landscape Planning, Juan Manuel del Pino, has stressed the need to be "pragmatic; we know the state of the municipal coffers and we must look for more realistic solutions than expropriation. The mayor, Ana Sala, said that "what we are excluding is doing nothing; we are not willing to pay for this land because there are other owners of other lands who are also waiting for a solution, waiting for the City Council to pay them.

Finally, the City Council has approved the proposal to move the development of this land to other areas, while the opposition has voted against it.

In addition, the plenary has approved the costs of 225,312.80 Euros to the Red Cross for the transport of sick people. The Mayor, Ana Sala, has pointed out that "we cannot stop providing this ambulance service, even if it is not our responsibility; it is the responsibility of the Generalitat (regional government), but it does not delegate the responsibility to us and does not take responsibility for the lack of medical transport service that we suffer in the community".

400,261.20 euros for the transport of waste to the Campello plant were also approved. The municipal auditor has reported that "the City Council issued the tender for the waste transport service, but one of the bidders appealed and we are blocked until the decision is made, but the service could not be stopped".

Also approved, with the votes of the government faction, was a procedure for extrajudicial recognition of obligations over 76,659.87 euros.

The Instituto de Ecología Litoral has sent the Calpe City Council the annual report on the state of the seagrass meadows on the beaches of Calpe and it is clear that the Arenal-Bol, Fossa and Cantal Roig beaches, from which samples have been taken and analysed, are in good condition.

The Posidonia oceanica meadow is distributed along the entire coastline of Calpe Bay; in the area between the port and Bol beach the Posidonia develops between 10 and 17 metres deep. Above is a meadow with a mixture of Cymodocea nodosa and Posidonia oceanica of lower density, locally called "vairassos".

In the western half of the bay, up to Cape Toix, the Posidonia meadow develops at a shallower depth of 4 metres to 20 metres. From Puerto Blanco to Morro de Toix there is, according to the report of the Instituto de Ecología Litoral, a continuous and very well preserved meadow.

To analyze the Posidonia meadows, density and coverage are used as parameters. Thus, the value of the sampling density on the beach of Arenal-Bol is 333'56 stalks/M², which is a normal average value within the depth range in which the meadow is located. The coverage on this beach was 72.79%, higher than in the previous year. The Fossa beach has a density of 453'61 stalks/m² and 68'15% coverage and the Cantal Roig beach has a density of 309'02 stalks/m² and a coverage of 80'53%.

The ecosystem of the Posidonia oceanica meadows is protected at European level by its great biodiversity and ecological value; at the same time, it is an ecosystem that is very sensitive to changes in water transparency, changes in salinity, mechanical erosion or lack of oxygen.
