La Manzanera is one of the most unique enclaves in Calpe. It is a residential area designed in the 1960s by Ricardo Bofill's architectural office and is unique from a landscape, architectural and environmental point of view.
However, the Urbanización is in a difficult environmental situation, as there are several developable areas and green areas of high scenic value near La Cala de la Manzanera, as well as the proximity to the Club Social La Manzanera, whose occupying right was granted to the city council a few years ago for rehabilitation. In these circumstances, it should be added that the city council has asked the plenary to declare the Xanadú and Muralla Roja buildings and the Club Social La Manzanera assets of cultural interest, a procedure that has not yet been completed.
In this situation, City Council, governed by PP and Ciudadanos, has decided to initiate a procedure to suspend the works and the permit in the Manzanera I and Manzanera II area. This is a temporary suspension, which must be approved by the plenary, while the Departamento de Territorio analyses new uses and identifies possible alternatives, that could improve the environmental and landscape quality of the area as much as possible.
The aim of this measure lies in the need to preserve one of the last green spaces on Calpe´s coast, an enclave subject to strong urban pressure, within the current government's commitment to a more sustainable model.
