The Calp Town Council has sent the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencian regional government) a description of the damage caused by storm Gloria and an economic assessment of it, in order to ask the Generalitat for 100% aid.

The total cost of the damage is 2,782,720 euros, broken down as follows: 243,132 euros for demolition, 700,966 euros for the retaining walls, 12,770 euros for repairing the breakwater, 638,955 euros for paving and roadway, 376,548 euros for stairs and ramps, 162,525 euros for equipment and furniture and 647,820 euros for planting.

Description of the damage

The report describes the damage to the individual beaches and bays. In Cala de les Bassetes, the retaining wall was damaged on the north side and there were landslides on the south side. In addition, the pedestrian bridge that connects the two sides has been completely damaged.

In Cala del Mallorquín, part of the natural embankment has collapsed, and in Cala de la Calalga the retaining wall, the safety fence and part of the roadway have collapsed.

There has been considerable damage to the La Fossa seafront promenade, resulting in breaks, slides and loss of sand. On Arenal Bol beach, ramps and stairs need to be restored, although the biggest problem is the lack of sand and the replacement of a wooden fence.

On Puerto Blanco beach, the sand level has dropped considerably and the intermediate part of the pier, which has been completely demolished, does not allow access to the last part of the pier. And in Les Urques bay, the biggest problem is the detachment of the rear vertical slope, with a large amount of rocks in the sandy area.

In the description of the damage, it is noted that most of the areas on the pavements and road surfaces have cracks and loose parts, and that landslides have occurred on the retaining walls and areas of great destruction can be seen.

As far as street furniture and facilities are concerned, all litter bins and footbaths as well as lighting and play areas that need to be replaced are badly affected. In the case of the stairs and ramps, there are areas where they have completely disappeared.

In addition, most of the trees are affected, the storm has uprooted palm trees and several planters are affected and will have to be removed for the safety of passers-by.

Description of the repair work

In the case of the promenades, the paving will be replaced, walls and stairs demolished and excavation and rubble clearance work carried out. Repair work is being carried out, walls, stairs, ramps and railings are being built, facilities are being repaired and elements of street furniture are being replaced. The construction of the protective molecule is also planned.

As far as the beaches are concerned, sand will be brought in until the level before the storm is reached and work will be carried out to overcome the slopes. In addition, the appropriate furniture will be installed (walkways, ramps, cabins, footbaths, water tanks, etc.).
