Aguas de Calpe has completed the emergency repair work on the drainage collector in the Avenida del Port.

The rehabilitation of a 165-metre section of the Avenida del Port sewer marks the completion of the third and final phase of this emergency repair work, which began following the sudden collapse of the asphalt of the Avenida del Port on 2 March last year following the collapse of a section of the collector that was more than three metres deep.

The work to repair and replace the collapsed section of the collector had to be carried out urgently, since it was not possible to guarantee the passage of heavy goods vehicles along Avenida del Port on their way to the port installations and, on the other hand, since it was impossible to collect the waste water produced in the area of the port closest to Peñón de Ifach.

Due to the great depth of the excavation and the nature of the terrain, beach sand, the excavation work was carried out using an armoured shoring system, a circumstance that made the work difficult and lengthened it.

First, the section of the collapsed collector was repaired and a new shaft was built. This work had to be interrupted because of the ban on work due to the declaration of the state of alarm.

Subsequently, a second collapse occurred in the section between the repaired collector and the port of the waste water pumping station (WWPS), so that Aguas de Calpe urgently needed to replace this section of the collector.

Given the structural weakness of the mass concrete pipe of the existing collector and the possibility of new collapses of the collector in a third phase, the last 165-metre section of the collector in Avenida del Port had to be repaired.

The work carried out ensures that the municipal sewage system in the Avenida del Port area is functional.
