The mixed company Aguas de Calpe has begun remodelling work on the Barranc Salat desalination plant. The aim is to improve the water and electrical efficiency of the facilities and at the same time guarantee its production capacity in the event of possible increases in the salinity of the water.

The aim is to update this desalination plant, which is more than 23 years old. It is planned to carry out remodelling work on the Barranc Salat I plant, built in 2000 with a capacity of 8,000 cubic metres per day, and to extend the Barranc Salat II plant, built in 2002, which has a production capacity of 3,000 cubic metres per day, by a further frame.

"These actions will ensure the production of the Barranc Salat desalination plant and therefore guarantee the supply of drinking water to the population", said the mayoress, Ana Sala, who highlighted the "fundamental" role that this facility plays in providing this service in times of high water consumption, such as the summer. She added that with these works, the Calp desalination plant "will also have lower energy costs and water losses will be reduced".

The remodelling works will consist of replacing and improving the filters and external piping as well as the high-pressure pumps, which will be replaced by more powerful and efficient equipment, in addition to increasing the number of pressure pipes to enable optimum operation in the face of higher water conductivity. A new filter-washing pumping system will also be installed to reduce water losses, among other actions.

In addition, the Barranc Salat II plant will be enlarged with a new frame that will remain in reserve and will come into operation in the event of a breakdown or maintenance work on the plant's other frames, thereby guaranteeing the production capacity of the facilities.

The works have a budget of 1.5 million euros and are expected to be completed this year.
