Calpe Town Council has closed a section of Arenal-Bol beach this morning following a break in the sewage pumping system that carries wastewater to the treatment plant. Specifically, the closed section, which covers 35 metres of coastline, affects the mouth of the Quisi ravine and, as a precautionary measure, bathing has been banned in the area, although the discharges have not affected either the sand on the beach or the sea. The blue flag flying over the beach has also been removed.
The town council has taken measures to eliminate this wastewater immediately. Aguas de Calpe is repairing the affected pipes and using pump trucks to remove the wastewater. The work is expected to be completed today.
"Thanks to the quick action of all the parties involved, Aguas de Calpe, local police and municipal brigades, the sewage has been prevented from reaching the sea and we have avoided a major disaster," said Pere Moll, councillor for beaches.
