The Department of Culture has given new impetus to the campaign to rehabilitate the various murals on the façades of the Old Town. Yesterday a collaboration agreement was signed with the owners of the façades of the murals located in Calle Purísima (on the façade of the old fishermen's granary) designed by Gerda Pasteur and the mural in Calle Vicente Gallard by the painter Fernando Baquero.
Through this agreement, the owners of the façades where the murals are located authorise the restoration work and renew their commitment to conserve the murals.
A few months ago, the rehabilitation projects for the murals were put out to tender, which establish how the rehabilitation work should be carried out so that their original appearance is not altered and they are maintained in the best possible condition. It is expected that before the end of the year the rehabilitation work on the murals will be awarded, with a budget of €27,200 for the Pòsit mural and €50,581 for the mural on Carrer Vicente Gallard.
In 2019, the restoration of the mural in Mosquit square by Elías Úrbez was carried out. The campaign for the recovery of murals in the old town will continue with the mural painted in 1989 by Pierre Le Fleur and located in Reverendo Penalva street, opposite the Torreó de la Peça and the mural in the Casa del Cocó, also by Elías Úrbez.
The murals and trompe l'oeil paintings in the Old Town of Calp have become one more tourist attraction that is a must-see when visiting the heart of the municipality. The councillor of Culture, Guillermo Sendra, has highlighted the collaboration of the owners and has indicated that "the murals in the historic centre of Calp are true works of art that enrich and give personality to this emblematic area; and this council is especially sensitive and involved in adopting the appropriate measures to preserve and make these artistic manifestations visible. These already approved restorations will be followed by others next year, until all the murals have been completed".
