This week the old town of Calpe will once again become a large open-air museum through the installation "Art al carrer" organised by the Departments of Culture and the Old Town. It consists of various plastic interventions in the historic centre with "The colours of the Mediterranean" as a common thread, which can be visited throughout the summer.
As in recent years, Art al Carrer has changed its format to open up to the participation of local associations and entities through a competition, with the aim of encouraging local participation in an artistic activity that adorns emblematic spaces in the Old Town for the enjoyment of citizens and visitors.
A total of 7 associations are taking part, namely: Amistades Belgas de Levante, Associació Músico-Cultural Xaranga La Xarlotà, Cruz Roja Española, Associació de Malalts de Fibromialgia i Fatiga Crónica Calpe, Asociación de Amigos del Arte, Filà Marins Corsaris and Asociación Belenista de Calpe.
Each association has been assigned a street to decorate by drawing lots and the winning association of this year's competition will be announced shortly. The Maite Boronat Occupational Centre and the Civic Centre for the Elderly also took part in the competition.
In addition, the Mayor, Purísima, Justicia, Llibertat streets, Plaza del Mosquit and Plaza Miguel Roselló squares will display on their balconies the canvases made by a total of 41 local painters who, under the slogan "The colours of the Mediterranean", have reflected their particular vision and technique.
This is the seventh edition of Art al Carrer, an initiative that aims to invigorate the Old Town of Calpe and at the same time show the artistic possibilities of local artists.
Guillermo Sendra, Councillor for Culture and the Old Town, said "I would like to expressly thank the associations and groups that have participated in the decoration of some of the streets of the historic centre of Calpe. These decorated streets together with the "les balconades", which are the canvases that hang on many of the balconies of the old town, turn this emblematic place into a real open-air museum that cannot be missed during the months of July and August".
