With the arrival of the summer season, the Municipal Department for the Environment of the Town Council of Calp has activated the campaign to prevent and locate the tiger mosquito. For this purpose, from June to October the Town Council has contracted the service of a specialized company that will be responsible for conducting a census of the areas with the presence of this annoying mosquito, placing traps in different parts of the municipality, susceptible to become focus of breeding, in addition of fumigation works.
On the other hand, in the fight against the tiger mosquito, citizens play a fundamental role since it is estimated that more than 90% of the breeding places are private. For this reason, the Town Council of Calp has published some brochures with information on the main focuses of this insect, which grows up in water accumulations, such as animal water fountains, water tanks, vases with water, sewers... and recommends not accumulating water in containers to prevent its proliferation. In addition, citizens can also notify the Town Council if they detect the presence of these mosquitoes to know the places they frequent and to act against it.
The tiger mosquito is an invasive species coming from Southeast Asia, capable of breeding in almost any water accumulation that lasts more than five days. Its bite is very annoying and can also occur during daytime hours.
