This year, the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) in charge of the Blue Flag programme has given special recognition to those beaches in the municipalities of Spain that have had a Blue Flag without interruption since the beginning of this programme in 1987.
In Spain there are 8,131 municipalities; around 400 have participated in the Blue Flag programme at some time, some 250 municipalities receive this award each year and only 8 municipalities have had a Blue Flag on one of their beaches for 36 consecutive years. One of these eight beaches is La Fossa beach in Calp.
For the last 36 years the La Fossa Beach has met the criteria of water quality, legality, information, environmental education and management, accessibility and safety required for Blue Flag certification. For this reason, this summer the promenade of La Fossa beach is displaying a specific blue flag that accredits these 36 years of award.
The Blue Flag has become the most recognisable and recognised symbol by millions of beach and port users in almost fifty countries, as well as a world standard of tourist ecocality, which precedes and inspires other beach and port quality certification initiatives.
