Calpe Town Council, through the Department of Equality, has created a working group to promote the feminisation of public spaces in the municipality. This initiative aims to break the gender gap in the names of streets, avenues and squares of the municipality and thus promote gender equality in public spaces.
The working group, which met yesterday for the first time, is made up of the Councillor for Equality, Itziar Doval, the Councillor for Tourism Planning, Mireia Ripoll, three representatives of the Association of Women for Equality, the Equality Agent, the representative of the Popular Party, Francisco Fernández de Ybarra, and the secretary of the body. The government team has invited all the political groups of the municipal corporation to participate in this working group in order to demonstrate a cross-cutting commitment to the cause.
To carry out the feminisation of the naming of public spaces, the current names will be reviewed to ensure that they reflect diversity and promote the recognition of outstanding women in history and society.
Among the names initially proposed are figures such as María Moliner, María Montessori, Isabel de Villena, Adela Cortina, Clara Campoamor, Anna Bofill, Simone de Beauvoir and Marie Curie. However, the process is open to more proposals, with the aim of ensuring an equitable and diverse representation in Calpe's street names.
"Calpe marks a significant milestone with the creation of this working group, an important step towards building a more inclusive and just community. We invite all the citizens of Calpe to participate in this process and to contribute with their ideas and suggestions", said the Councillor for Equality, Itziar Doval.
