The Town Council of Calp, through the Department of Citizen Services, managed by Hilde Backaert, has managed to get Correos to postpone until the 3rd September the interruption of post distribution in 16 housing estates, which originally was scheduled for the 5th February. The affected estates are Corralets, La Merced, El Sol, Ortenbach, Vallesa, Buenavista, Costeres, Los Pinos, Caleta, Bassetes, Pinamar, Carrió, Carrió Alto, Cometa III, Gran Sol and Empedrola.
In order to provide a solution to this problem, the municipal department has decided to install multi-domiciliary concentrated mailboxes in the said estates during this period, which will guarantee the distribution of mail in the future. Although in principle the installation of mailboxes is a matter that corresponds to the citizens, the Town Council has considered appropriate to carry out this initiative, aware of the difficulties that it entails for the residents of the estates, many of which are foreigners and are absent in certain periods of the year, in addition to the large volume of mailboxes that would be necessary.
Correos informed by letter the residents of these estates that it was going to interrupt the postal distribution in these residential areas due to the lack of mailbox batteries and that from the 5th February, the letters would have to be collected in the Calp post office.
Given the concern that this issue has aroused among citizens, the councillor for Citizen Services, Hilde Backaert, has held a meeting with the territorial director of the Area 5 of Correos affecting Calp, Blas Angel Barbadillo, reaching an agreement with Correos to finally postpone the interruption of service until the 3rd September.
"We wanted to put ourselves at the side of the citizen to solve this problem and make life easier because we are aware that it is impossible for the residents to install their own batteries of mailboxes", said Hilde Backaert.
