A total of 2850 pupils from primary, middle, secondary and special schools began the 2018-2019 school year in Calpe today.

This year, 157 children are enrolled in the Silene d'Ifac kindergarten, 519 in the second cycle, 1,145 in primary school, 719 in secondary school, 158 in secondary school, 45 in basic vocational training, 40 in intermediate vocational training and 67 in special school. Enrolment is possible throughout the year, so these figures may vary.

The Mayor of Calpe, Ana Sala, and the Education Councillor, Rebeca Merchán, visited the Azorín School this morning to find out how the new school year began. This summer, through the municipal brigades, the Calpe City Council carried out various gardening, sanitary, carpentry, electrical and blacksmithing works in schools in the municipality to prepare for the start of the course.

The Mayor was also interested in the project of the new gymnasium to be built in the Azorín school as part of the Edificant Programme. The project design is expected to be tendered shortly and construction of the facilities, estimated at EUR 616,000, can begin next year.

With the arrival of summer the Calpe City Council has launched another year the campaign to prevent and detect tiger mosquito. From June to October a company will be responsible for placing traps in different areas of the municipality to conduct a census of this insect and be able to act with greater forcefulness in areas where its presence is detected. This company will also carry out prevention work in the rest of the municipality.

The City Council recalls that in the fight against the tiger mosquito the citizens play a fundamental role since it is estimated that more than 90 percent of the places where mosquitoes  can breed are private. The Aedes albopictus is raised in water accumulations, such as animal drinkers, water tanks, vases with water, scuppers ... so it is recommended not to keep containers that accumulate water to prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes. In addition, citizens can contact the municipality if they detect the presence of these mosquitoes so that the company fighting mosquitoes knows the places they frequent and thus be able to act against them.

On the other hand, the City Council has applied to the Universal and Public Health Department of the Regional Government  for a subsidy of 3,630 Euros for treatment costs to fight the tiger mosquito for the year 2019.

The tiger mosquito is an invasive species native to Southeast Asia, able to breed in almost any accumulation of water that remains more than five days. Its bite is very annoying and can also occur during daylight hours.

The Calpe City Council has set up a geoportal, a web-based tool that integrates all geographical information about the municipality and can be displayed on various maps. In this way, citizens, businesses and the various public institutions can now quickly and flexibly retrieve all data related to a specific physical area of the town and originating from both the city council and other public administrations.

With the geoportal, citizens can access the urban planning information for each plot of land in the locality (with its features, compatible uses...), environmental information (i.e. the protected areas of the locality, the beaches, the seabed cartography, the type of soil)....), street furniture (where the lights, trees, benches, wastebaskets, pedestrian crossings or letterboxes are located...), the street map of the town (with its names, neighbourhood borders, streets and registration offices). In addition, there are a number of questions related to mobility (where parking meters and areas with limited parking times are located), where the sewage and water supply pipes are located, as well as areas at risk of flooding and earthquakes. Citizens can also use this portal to find out the status of the procedures.

The geoportal also contains aerial photographs of the city from 1956, which show the development of the city area.

The aim of such a tool is to create more transparency and to make information about the city of Calpe accessible to the citizens. Citizens can not only view but also download this information and save time by not having to visit the city's offices.

On the other hand, the geoportal becomes a useful tool for the city administration. It also gives city officials access to other information, such as the tax levies, the registration office or at a glance, which properties pay the property tax (IBI), the waste disposal levies or the entrance fees (vado). City employees can also find out which citizens live in which neighbourhoods or which apartments are unoccupied.

The lifeguard service on the beaches of Calpe begins its summer season on Saturday 1 June. Until 15 October, 35 lifeguards of the company Eulen will ensure safety when bathing on the beaches of Calpe. Their task will be to prevent possible incidents and to help those who are in danger. To this end, they will carry out surveillance on land and sea, either on the beach itself or from the watchtowers near the beach, or from two boats crossing the 13 kilometres of Calpe's coastline, and from two kayaks for bathing areas. This year the service will be reinforced by another lifeguard on the beach of Puerto Blanco.

The lifeguard staff consists of personnel qualified not only for sea rescue, but also for first aid and health care for potential victims. In fact, on the beaches of La Fossa and El Arenal-Bol, the busiest beach, there are defibrillators and an ambulance to transport victims to a health centre. Each lifeguard has an emergency kit to deal with basic incidents and the rescue stations have all the necessary first aid materials.

They are also responsible for the supervision of the two bathing areas for disabled guests in Calpe, one in the Fossa and the other in Arenal-Bol, and accompany disabled bathers with amphibious chairs for bathing in the sea.

The lifeguard service will operate from 1 to 15 June from 11:00 to 19:00 and from 16 to 30 September and from 15 June to 15 September from 10:30 to 20:00.
